Gavinia syntrips (Long 1999, NMC P160710 skull, NMV P160709 tail, Middle Devonian) wa originally considered basal to coelacanths (Actinistia), a calde that no longer nests with pre-tetrapod lobefins. It has a heterocercal tail, a short dentary and is missing the maxilla. In the LRT Gavinia nests with the juvenile Eusthenopteron.
