This genus is known from a fragmentary skull and several partial skeletons. The dental morphology is lophodont with a narrow rostrum. It nests basal to Prodinoceras iand derived from extant Monoelphis sorex.

These two taxa are not congeneric in the LRT.

Right: Ectocion ralstonensis (Cope 1882 a, e, Granger 1915; Late Paleocene; 11 cm skull length) is generally considered a member of the Phenacodontidae, like Phenacodus, but here nests It nests with Eolophiodon in the LRT.

Prodinoceras martyr (Matthew, Granger and Simpson 1929, Late Paleocene, 2.9 m long) is traditionally considered the most basal uintathere. In the LRT it nests between Ectocion cedrus and Alcidedorbignya, among the most primiitive placentals, derived from extant Monodelphis sorex, which is tiny with large fangs.

Eolophiodon laboriense (Robinet et al. 2015; early Eocene; MHNT.PAL.2010.19.3.1, scale bar = 5cm) is widely considered a smaller relative of Lophiodon and living tapirs with a very narrow skull. Here it nestsinstead with Ectocion ralstonensis among the hippos.

Metacheiromys tatusia (M. marshi (YPM 12903 holotype is chimaera, part primate; Middle Eocene; Wortman 1903, Osborn 1904, Simpson 1931, AMNH 11718, 25cm presacral length) was originally considered a primate, then an edentate and then as a palaenodont. Here the data nests between Prodinoceras and Ernanodon. Few to no teeth line the jaws, except for the upper and lower canines, which were retained. The sacrum appears odd in that only the posterior sacral ribs attached to the ilia. This may not be so.

Ernanodon antelios (Ding 1979, Ting, Wang and Tong 2005; Kondrashov P and Agadjanian AK 2012; late Paleocene, 50cm snout-vent length) was considered a primitive anteater, then related to Metacheiromys, as it is here – not a sister to the pangolins, but similar by convergence.
