Tuditanus punctulatus (Cope 1871, Carroll and Baird 1968) middle Pennsylvanian ~306 mya. was derived a sister to Doleserpeton. Pantylus, Diplocaulus and Utaherpeton were sister taxa.

Distinct from Doleserpeton, the jawline of Tuditanus was concave with longer teeth. The occipital notch was filled in with a posterior expansion of the squamosal and a wider skull roof that kept the original order of unfused bones as found in Utegenia. Carroll and Baird (1968) reconstructed the skull roof with a fused supratemporal/tabular, as in Pantylus, but I found these two to be unfused. It appears possible that the prefrontal and larimal were fused, as they are in Diplocaulus.

The scapulocoracoid was poorly ossified. The metacarpals were all subequal. All of the phalanges were subequal. The manual digit unguals were hour-glass shaped, not sharp.

The ilium of Tuditanus apparently has two dorsal processes but that is the result of a splitting ofthe rotated posterior process. The tarsus was better ossified. There are only two proximal tarsal elements, as in Gephyrostegus. The metatarsals were also nearly identical with each other and the phalanges. The medial centrale was absent here and smaller in the related Pantylus. The unguals were squared off according to Carroll and Baird (1988). That wasn't apparent in the photographs and no sister taxa share that character.

Microsaurs have been typically nested just outside the Reptilia (= Amniota) along with Diadectomorphs. With more taxa included, some microsaurs now nest with frogs and salamanders, just outside the Reptilia, down the ways abit. Silvanerpeton was a common ancestor.

Carroll, Bybee and Tidwell (1991) considered tiny Utaherpeton to be the oldest microsaur and an amphibian. They reported, "...no synapomorphies are recognized that support a specific sister-group relationship between microsaurs and any other group of Paleozoic tetrapods."

Vaughn (1962) reported, "there are good reasons for considering the microsaurs as relatives of the captorhinomorphs."

Gregory, Peabody and Price (1956) placed microsaurs with Aistopoda, Nectridia, Lysorophia, Urodela and Gymnophiona (frogs and salamanders) as recovered here.
